What is the link between erectile dysfunction and male infertility?

What is male infertility?

Male infertility is the inability to create a pregnancy with a fertile woman and can be caused by several things; testicular damage, chemotherapy, medications and low levels of testosterone. However, the most common cause of infertility in men is poor quality semen meaning a low sperm count, or slowly-moving or abnormally shaped sperm.

What is erectile dysfunction and how is it linked to infertility?

Erectile dysfunction, otherwise known as impotence, is the inability to get and/or maintain an erection. Nearly all men will be affected by the condition at some point in their lives and ED is especially prevalent in older men between the ages of 40 and 70.

Many men think that if they have erectile dysfunction, this means they have a low sperm count and must be infertile as a result. However, this not the case. Erectile dysfunction doesn’t always mean that you have a low sperm count. The two are not usually connected.

When does erectile dysfunction cause infertility?

Erectile dysfunction interrupts and prevents intercourse so it can cause impact, in that way, on your ability to produce a baby if left untreated.

Also in the case of some men, who have had cancer there can be some impact on fertility rates. This is because cancer can change the hormones in the body which can then cause a drop-in testosterone. This decrease in testosterone may not only affect the ability to achieve and maintain an erection, but it can also affect libido. Combined, these two things can negatively affect male fertility.

Can you treat both male infertility and erectile dysfunction at once?

When erectile dysfunction usually doesn’t directly cause male infertility in the traditional sense, treating it can increase the chances of pregnancy with a fertile woman. Popular medications to treat ED include; Viagra, Cialis, Sildenafil and Levitra.
