Shocked?
You can see why our doctors bang on about using condoms!

We've calculated how many people your partners are likely to have slept with before you. Then we calculated your partners' partners, and their partners' partners, and so on - for just six degrees. This illustrates how exposed you can be to STIs, and the importance of safe sex.

Lloyds Online Doctor offers highly accurate STI test kits that you can use at home and cost less than a visit to your doctor.

What is Sex Degrees of Separation?

The spread of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) has grown dramatically in recent years, but many of us don’t even realise we have them. Here at Lloyds Online Doctor, we have chosen to highlight the very real risk people face of contracting STIs by demonstrating the exponential effect of sexual contact.

The theory of our Sex Degrees calculator is that of “Six Degrees of Separation” – the idea that all human relations are joined to others by as few as six connections. Following this idea, we take the number of sexual partners you’ve had and their age when you last slept together, multiply it by the number of partners they are statistically likely to have slept with, and then by the partners of their partners to the power of six to estimate how many indirect partners you could potentially have been exposed to sexually.

This calculator is not a diagnostic tool. Instead, it demonstrates the high STI exposure rate that can exist and how your risk of contracting them increases with each new partner. When it comes to STIs, you need to be aware of the bigger picture – it’s not just direct sexual contact with one person that you need to worry about. Obviously, if you only have one sexual partner, and they have slept with you alone, you will avoid STIs.

It’s also important to remember that you are still exposed to several types of STI even if you use condoms: unfortunately, you can contract herpes and genital warts just through skin-on-skin contact, oral sex and sex toys. Aside from practicing safe sex, the main message is to know your own sexual health status and get tested regularly for STIs.

For any questions or concerns about your sexual health, contact your local GP, GUM clinic or order a discreet test kit via Lloyds Online Doctor.
