About Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea
This test identifies genital chlamydia and genital gonorrhoea, two of the most common STIs in Ireland. Chlamydia and gonorrhoea are both usually transmitted through having unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex. However, they can also be passed by sharing sex toys, or genital contact. It is possible that you may not have any symptoms and still be infected therefore it is important to get tested. The sooner chlamydia and gonorrhoea are identified and treated the lower the risk of long term complications.
Standard STI test Kit FAQs
What STIs are tested for?
This test identifies genital chlamydia and genital gonorrhoea. It will not look for any infection in your throat or rectum.
When should I take this test?
You should wait two weeks since possible exposure as it is unlikely that chlamydia or gonorrhoea infections will be picked up before then.
|When should I not take this test?|
If you are experiencing or subsequently develop any lower abdominal or pelvic pain or irregular, abnormal or unusual vaginal bleeding then you should NOT use this service and go straight to your local sexual health clinic or see a doctor, as these symptoms require urgent assessment and treatment.
It is not advised that you repeat the test for chlamydia within six weeks of taking treatment following a positive result.
What do I need to do?
The test requires you to take a urine sample. You then post the sample to the lab in the pre-paid packaging provided. The test contains full instructions on what you need to do.
How long will I have to wait for my results?
Your test results should be ready within three working days of your sample arriving at the lab. You will receive an email (and a text if you opted in) when your results are ready.
What happens if I test positive?
If you test positive for chlamydia we will provide you with a free prescription for chlamydia treatment, if clinically suitable. For gonorrhoea you will need to see your local doctor for treatment and our doctors will advise you on what to do next. If you have any questions or concerns you can message our doctors at any time and they will respond within one working day.
Will you tell anyone my results?
