About Champix

  • How do I take Champix?

    You should start to take Champix a week before you stop smoking- so before your start you should decide which date you want to stop.   

    When you begin the treatment you should take one tablet a day for the first three days, then one tablet twice a day for the rest of the course. We’ll send you full details on the dose and regime via your Patient Record before you start.

  • How effective is Champix?

    Evidence suggests that taking Champix is likely to more than double your chance of successfully stopping smoking.

  • Are there any side effects to taking Champix?

    As with all medicines there is a risk of side effects. Common side effects include:

    • Nausea
    • Headaches
    • Abnormal dreams
    • Difficulty sleeping
    • Increased appetite or altered taste sensation
    • Dry mouth
    • Dizziness
    • Tiredness and sleepiness
    • Vomiting
    • Constipation or diarrhoea
    • Feeling bloated
    • Indigestion
    • Flatulence

    If you suffer from dizziness or sleepiness from taking Champix, you should not drive, operate machinery or engage in any other potentially hazardous activities until the symptoms pass.

  • Rare side effects of Champix

    Champix like all medicines has some very rare side effects. These rare side effects for Champix include:

    • Heart attacks, or worsening of heart conditions
    • Hallucinations
    • Changes in thinking or behaviour (such as aggression and irrational behaviour)
    • Depression and suicidal thoughts
    • Seizures

    If you become agitated, depressed or suicidal whilst taking Champix, you should stop your treatment immediately and contact your doctor straight away.  In an emergency please go to your nearest emergency department.
